The historic Plaza Theatre

The Plaza Theatre originally opened in November 1963, and long before area attractions and movie megaplexes, the Plaza Theatre gained popularity as Orlando’s first and only twin (two-screen) movie theater. For years it was nicknamed the “rocking chair theatre” by locals due to the distinctive audience seating.

After changing hands, the Plaza was ultimately bought by the Odeon Corporation in 1985. It was soon enough showing second-run films before closing in the early 1990s.

From 1992 to 1996, the Plaza was a family-owned theatre that offered live performances with a Christian theme.

Following extensive renovations, the Plaza Theatre reopened the following year as one of Orlando’s newest live performance venues. In 2002, the historic spinning Plaza signage was rehabbed, shining and revolving for the first time in years.

Today, the Plaza Theatre continues to bring outstanding live performances to Central Florida. In fact in 2009, the Plaza was named the Best Concert Venue by the readers of the Orlando Sentinel.

For more information on other concerts and events being held at the Plaza Theatre, visit the theatre’s website.
